Dr. Kurt's Favorite Snacks
People always ask me what the best snacks to eat after a detox program or a healthy lifestyle plan. Here is a list of some of my favorite options.
Jerky.
This is one of the best snacks on the planet. The hard part is finding free-range, wild, 100% grass fed, minimally processed jerky. A lot of jerky out there has wheat and soy added to it for flavor. Avoid any jerky with additive you don't know, soy, wheat, dairy or other common allergens not part of the meat. Jerky is simply dried meat. Leave it at that.
The New Primal Jerky offers 100% grass fed beef jerky.
Ostrim Paleo Trail Mix is by far my absolute favorite snack. It has Ostrich and Beef jerky with a nice trail mix. The perfect on the go snack.
Macadamia Nuts.
Macadamia nuts are a superior nut when it comes to nutrient content. They get a category of their own. Macadamia nut butter is also a great snack.
Celery.
Nut butters mixed with celery are one of my favorite fast and easy snacks. Ants on a log make it even more fun and add a bit of sweetness. Cut up some celery sticks, spread on your favorite nut butter (typically avoiding peanuts as they are legumes) and add a couple dried cranberries or cherries to each stick.
Nuts and Seeds.
Almonds, walnuts, pecans, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, nut butters made from the same nuts and without processing. Always shoot for the highest quality, organic, non processed nuts and seeds.
Hard-Boiled Eggs
Adding some salt and pepper, other spices, a touch of olive oil make an easy to eat and travel with snack.
Canned Fish.
Canned tuna, sardines and other fish assuming they are of the highest quality standards are great options for a snack or meal. I personally shoot for the packed in olive oil versions, but other packaging can be fine. Quality is the most important factor.
Trail Mix.
Nuts and seeds should always be the primary part of any trail mix. M&M's and chocolate should be left out or kept to a absolute minimum, and that also applies to dried fruit. It can add a lot of flavor but too much and it increases the sugar content to a level not wanted.
This list is a great starting point to begin thinking about healthy snacking. As you learn more about healthy eating and experience a life of healthy habits you may begin to experiment more and find your own healthy snacks. Enjoy!
